Christmas Markets are typically late afternoon and early evening festivities and celebrations, which results in a meal plan that usually includes breakfast at the hotel and dinner after the Christmas Market Visits. On travel days we have also included a lunch program.

maastrichtAfter breakfast you are invited to join us for a Photography Walking Tour with a guided narrative explaining the early Roman influence, the history of the Frankish Era, the tumultuous Middle Ages, the Renaissance and today’s importance of Maastricht as a focal point in the European Community. At the end of the tour our luxury bus will be waiting to take us to Chateau Neercanne where lunch is served.

Maastricht marketAfter lunch we get ready for our first Christmas Market Experience visiting Maastricht’s famous Winterland Market. The Christmas event/market at Maastricht, known as Magical Maastricht, will appeal to those who do not enjoy an overly large sprawling market experience but want something spectacular they will remember forever. This is a cosy Christmas market to feel at home in with some lovely sights and experiences.

It is convenient for visitors to explore on foot, to eat locally made treats and for the more daring to skate on the temporary 100m squared ice-rink that is put up for the duration of the market or take a spin on the big wheel. There are other festive attractions unique to the city such as the Festival of Lights and people come from far away to enjoy the stalls and shop for locally sourced items.

AmbiorixToday after breakfast we are going to take a 20 minute coach trip to the city of Tongeren in Belgium to visit the famous Antique and Curiosity Market in the heart of the city.

In Roman times the city was called Attuaca Tongrorum and the only settlement that received city rights from the Emperor in Rome. The city still has a substantial Roman presence these days, accentuated by strong Medieval and Renaissance architecture and walled city planning.
Not only is the city famous for its inner city antique and curiosities markets, which stretch throughout the heart, but it is also reportedly the birthplace of the world famous Belgian Waffle.

valkenburgLunch today will be served in the town of Valkenburg in a 500 year old Castle. After lunch we’ll visit the Christmas Market CNN credited as one of the 10 Best Christmas Experiences in the world.

Because much of the Christmas Market Experience is displayed in centuries’ old caves. Music, light shows, the warming smells of baked goods, dozens and dozens of stalls with a wide variety of holiday gift ideas, loads of Belgian chocolates, Dutch cookies and candles and the great part of it all is that the entire town is dressed up in Christmas atmosphere.

Weihnachtsmarkt2Day Four starts out with a delicious breakfast at the hotel.
After breakfast we’re taking you on a scenic tour with as ultimate destination the spa city of Aachen/Aix La Chapelle just across the German border.

This city was the northern capital of the Frankish Empire during Charlemagne’s reignin the 7th century. Coming out of from Maastricht we will pay brief respects to the American World War II Cemetery and Memorial in Margraten, followed by a late morning coffee break at the highest point in the Netherlands on top of the Vaalser Mountain (abt. 1,059ft alt.) This is the only point where 3 countries; the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium meet. The break and stop for morning coffee and a delicious local pastry called “Limburgse vlaai”.

A German lunch will be awaiting you, followed by an inner city walking tour that includes the magnificent Dom Cathedral and a visit to the world famous Weihnacht’s market.

Each Christmas, the squares and streets around the Aachen Town Hall are transformed into a fabulous Christmas City that entices the young and old alike. With so many stalls, there is vast choice to suit all budgets; from original and traditional gifts to stylish and luxury goods. Famous for Aachener Printenmann (gingerbread), the market stands out for its atmosphere, choice of produce and location. Adults can warm up with mulled wine, whilst children revel on the carousel. Since its beginnings in the 1970s, visitor and exhibitor numbers have rocketed, making this vibrant market well-worth a visit.

mercatini-nataleToday we say goodbye to the Belgian/Dutch Christmas experience and move into the heart of the German Rhein-Ruhr area as we explore Christmas Markets in the cities of Düsseldorf and Cologne and small town markets in the Eifel Mountains. The drive from Maastricht to Cologne per luxury coach takes about one hour depending on traffic and we should be checking into the hotel around noon. After settling in and lunch, we’ll take the coach once again for a 30 minute drive north to the old town of Düsseldorf and its world famous Christmas markets.

The Christmas markets of Düsseldorf transform the metropolis at the Rhine into a magical festive world. Discover all kinds of Christmas delights at over 200 lovingly decorated huts and explore the vast array of theme worlds in numerous parts of the city. You will find glittering Christmas tree decorations, distinguished handcrafts and plenty of tasty seasonal treats offered at seven different locations all within easy walking distance.

The 450 square metres ice rink at Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz guarantees Christmas fun for kids of all ages. With the architecturally impressive Düsseldorfer Theatre (Schauspielhaus) in the background the Christmas market perfectly links tradition with modern spirit. Just as magical a setting for the Christmas market is Düsseldorf’s Marktplatz at the Town Hall.

Metal smiths, glassblowers and candle makers invite to a very special Christmas shopping experience right beneath Düsseldorf’s landmark, the equestrian statue of the prince-elector Jan Wellem. The Engelchenmarkt (little angels market) on Heinrich-Heine-Platz is distinguished by its Art-Nouveau setting and a “heavenly atmosphere”. The Christmas market on the street “Flinger Straße” presents charming and unique little huts that are modelled on historic town houses in Düsseldorf. The traditional ‘Glühwein’ pyramid serving spiced hot mulled wine is another highlight of this Christmas market which has become a distinctive and popular meeting point over years.

At the Sternchenmarkt (little stars market) on Stadtbrückchen square, giant crystals and sparkling stars on sky-blue stalls create a dreamy winter wonderland. Visitors can experience a new highlight of the Düsseldorf christmas market at the Schadowplatz: a wintry white Christmas village with a cosy and stylish flair of Scandinavia. Aromas of traditional snacks and winterly drinks, handmade art crafts and another merry-go-round for the children are all waiting only for you!

Tip: A stroll along the world-famous Königsallee is a must. The giant chestnut trees along the boulevard sparkle with thousands of lights, radiating a wonderful Christmas atmosphere. A unique shopping experience is guaranteed!

2014-11-21-WM-Hafen-FJR-010Take it easy in the morning hours as mental and physical preparation for a walking tour for the afternoon and evening. Six markets in the city alone are on the schedule for today, yet organized and mapped in such a way that you may long for even more.

In the Christian calendar Advent starts on the Sunday closest to the last month of the year and ends on Christmas Day. During this times, the 6 squares in Cologne’s centre turn into one giant Christmas Market. But in contrast with many other cities, these six markets are distinctly different from each otherThe largest market is in Cologne Catherdral Square, while the Alter Market keeps the beautiful city hall in its background. Yet another one is located in the Neumarkt Shopping area, while a medieval one is staged near the Hahnenburg Tor, a medieval town gate. During market days, there is entertainment, music, concerts and play presentations, an ice skating rink, Christmas Nativity scenes and much much more.

mon2Today we are going on a little adventure as we climb into the foothills of the Eifel mountains for a visit to the picturesque towns of Monschau and Hellenthal, which Christmas Markets for many years have been called the most beautiful and romantic in North Rhine – WestPhalia.

It is a magnificent panoramic route and you may want to have your camera fully charged.

The Christmas Market in Hellenthal is backdropped by a 900 year old castle ruin, while in the neighboring town of Mechernich you will be treated to a medieval christmas experience in 14th century Satzvey Castle.
